Krav Maga is a relatively new, modern and highly effective method of self-defense that can be learned in a short period of time by untrained and inexperienced men and women in combat sports. One learns to react to attacks with instinctive movements instead of learning complicated techniques, which can be hard and tedious to learn.
It was originally developed by Imi Sde-Or (Imrich Lichtenfeld) for the Israeli border guards and special forces. Krav Maga was then also adopted by the civilian population. Krav Maga offered them effective protection at a time when violent clashes were common in Isreal.
Since Krav Maga was developed for use in street fights there are no rules and no competitions. If one is attacked, one applies the techniques that are required to protect one’s life and health most efficiently. Krav Maga teaches how to react to attacks from all directions. Students learn to attack sensitive areas of the body of the attacker, such as the eyes, throat, groin, etc but without use of unnecessary force and without generating unnecessary injuries.
Krav Maga has two major components:
The defense against attacks of all kinds and close combat.
With the defense techniques, students learn to defend themselves against enemy attacks, to prevent own injuries. The defensive techniques are directed against a number of aggressive attacks like punches, kicks, foot techniques, etc. and also against the attacker who carries a weapon. The techniques are useful in a broad range of situations.
The close combat is the continuation of this and more advanced. Here, the student learns how to make the opponent harmless in the most effective manner possible. For bodyguards, police units and special operations and anti-terrorist groups special seminars will be offered in order to meet the special needs of these groups. Krav Maga is therefore different from the other martial arts, since it does not build on a long tradition. It is a modern system that allows you to defend yourself effectively and is suitable for men and women and of every age group and fitness level. It is easy to learn as it is based on instinctive reactions.
